How is it then, that you often have the case where someone who has taken a life, either deliberately or as a result of some other criminal action, can get sentenced to a shorter spell in jail than someone who has committed an offence where only material things have been affected.<br /><br />When an illegal immigrant who has no driving license, no insurance... no anything, mows down and kills a young child in a car he shouldn't be driving and gets sentenced to just two years - What is the judge on? How must that family feel? Is this justice?<br /><br />When a persistent offender who has a recorded history of psychological disorders is released from an institution, only to re-offend days after, where was the common sense and logic in the decision?<br /><br />There are just far too many cases coming to light which beggar belief at what can only described as the sheer incompetency of our judicial system and of the people who are supposed to be upholding its integrity. Whether its because our jails are already overcrowded or otherwise but far too many sentences are far too lenient and there just isn't any real deterrent for some crimes.<br /><br />If sentences were tougher, there would be a lot more people out there thinking twice before they committed a crime. "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime" and, in my book, a life sentence should mean just that - not out after 10 years for "good behaviour".
